BRANDON BOTZER WINS TEAM ARCHERY SHOOT
Junior Brandon Botzer was the top shooter at the BPFC Archery Shoot held on August 28, 2007 at the Boy Scout Cabin in
South Park. The shoot was organized, instructed and supervised by Mr. and Mrs. Welsh and scouts from the Boy Scouts
of America. After a bit of practice, BP fencers shot thirty arrows at six targets (four at thirty feet, two at
fifty feet) and were scored out of a possible 300 points. Brandon shot a 234 to lead all BP fencers. The
complete results were: 1st- Brandon Botzer 234, 2nd- Ryan Germann 217, 3rd- William Botzer 182, 4th- Jake Lampenfield 181,
5th- Brandon Rauch 180, 6th- Alex Lenneman 175, 7th- Coach Tobias 171, 8th- Ryan Purtell 168, 9th- Tyler Stay 158, 10th- Nick
Botzer 152, 11th- Emma Killmeyer 141, 12th- Jeff Scott 123, 13th- Shelby Welsh/Randi Fedela 89, 15th- Kelsey Lauritzen 63.
THOMAS, SENIORS BIG WINNERS AT 11TH ANNUAL BPFC AWARDS PARTY
Senior girls’ captain Brittany Thomas was the big winner at the 2007 BPFC awards party at South Park
on July 6, taking home the O’Shea Service Award, Coaches’ Award and the Team MVP Award, as well as one of the
newly created TALONS scholarships. She also received a pin for perfect attendance at this season’s practices, along
with freshman Kelsey Lauritzen. Seniors Michael Gray and Jack Cheng took home two awards each. Gray
won the Best Offense Award and a TALONS scholarship, and Cheng won the Vaughn Academic Award and the Fencer of the Year Award,
which the team announced will be named after Thomas as of next season. All three seniors were also
presented with plaques in honor of 100+ victories and given electric foils as graduation gifts by the club's fencers, coaches
Freshman Brandon Rauch won the Rookie of the Year Award and the award for Most Victories. Brandon Botzer won
the award for Best Defense. Thomas and Rauch were presented with medals for their individual PSFC
Championships, and Thomas, Gray and Brandon Botzer received pins commemorating their all-conference selection. Varsity letter winners were Cheng, Gray, Thomas, Rauch, Lauritzen Brandon Botzer, Ryan Germann, Devon Verner, Alex
Lenneman, Tara Helfer, Abigail Ballani, and Ashley Bobak.
The team also received T-shirts commemorating their 2007 PSFC Epee Championship, as did the chaperones
from the team trip to Washington, DC. The coaches were presented with gifts by the fencers and parents as
BPFC BRINGS HOME HIGHEST MEDAL TALLY AT 2007 PSFC INVITATIONAL
Bethel Park fencers captured eleven of sixteen medals at the 2007 PSFC Invitational Tournament on May 19 at Taylor Allderdice
High School. Brandon Botzer (9-0) took Gold in the Boys' Foil event, defeating teammate Michael Gray (7-2), who claimed
the Silver. Bronze medalists in Boys' Foil were BP's Devon Verner (6-2) and Nick Botzer (6-2). Abigail Ballani
(5-2) and Ashley Bobak (3-4) each claimed Bronze medals for BPFC in the Girls' Foil competition. In the Boys' Epee category,
Ryan Germann (7-2) defeated fellow Black Hawk Brandon Rauch (8-1) in the finals to capture the Gold medal. (Rauch took
the Silver.) BP's Tyler Stay (2-6) also picked up a Bronze medal in the event. BP's Tara Helfer (3-2) captured
the Gold in the Girls' Epee event, while her teammate Brittany Thomas (2-2) brought home a Bronze. Twenty-two Bethel Park
fencers competed in the PSFC Invitational's four events this year, the most of any school present.
BPFC CAPTURES SECOND STRAIGHT PSFC EPEE TITLE
The Bethel Park Fencing Team defeated archrival Allderdice 5-2 on May 17 at Washington Elementary School to capture
its second consecutive conference epee championship. Brandon Rauch was 3-0 in the match, and Michael Gray was 2-0.
Brittany Thomas captained the BP team, which finished the season 7-1 overall. The Hawks also took the individual championship
when Brandon Rauch (10-0) edged out teammate Michael Gray (9-0) for the individual conference epee title by virtue of a better
The Bethel Park epee team finished the regular season atop the PSFC standings at 5-1 and advanced to the championship
round of the playoffs by easily dispatching number four North Hills 5-0 in the semi-finals. Brandon Rauch
and Michael Gray supplied two victories apiece in the semi-final match, and Brittany Thomas contributed one as well.
BP FENCERS SELECTED AS FENCING MVP'S BY LOCAL NEWSPAPER
BP fencers Michael Gray and Brittany Thomas were selected by the South Hills newspaper The Almanac as high
school fencing MVP's for the 2007 season. The BPFC seniors were honored at The Almanac's "Premiere Performers"
banquet on Sunday, May 20 at the Greentree Radisson Hotel.
THREE BP FENCERS EARN PSFC ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS IN 2007
BP fencers Brittany Thomas, Brandon Botzer and Michael Gray were named to the PSFC All-Conference Team for the 2007 foil
season. Both Thomas (18-2) and Botzer (12-5) were unanimous selections, while Gray (10-2) became the first
fencer in conference history to make the team as a write-in selection.
FIVE BP FENCERS NAMED TO PSFC WEBSITE'S FENCING HONOR ROLL IN 2007
Five BPFC fencers have been named to the PSFC website's "Fencing Honor Roll," which honors the most outstanding
male and female fencers in each round of conference competition. Most recently, Brandon Rauch was named to the
"Epee Honor Roll" as the most outstanding epee fencer for the 2nd round of the regular season and the first round of the playoffs.
He was 5-0 in those rounds with an indicator (+/-) rating of +21. Boys' assistant captain Michael Gray was named to
the "Epee Honor Roll" as the conference's most outstanding epee fencer for round one of 2007 epee competiton. He finished
the first epee round 3-0 with an indicator rating of +12. Girls' assistant captain Tara Helfer was named to
the honor roll for round 1 of foil competition, in which she was 5-0 with a +10 indicator rating, as well as round 4
of foil competition, in which she was 4-0 with a +14 indicator rating. Both BP captains received the honor in round
3 of foil competition. Brittany Thomas was 8-0 with a +23 indicator rating, and Jack Cheng finished 4-0 with an indicator
rating of +14.
BPFC FINISHES 2007 CONFERENCE FOIL SEASON AS RUNNERS-UP
The Bethel Park Boys' and Girls' Fencing Teams both finished the 2007 foil season as PSFC Runners-Up with identical records
of 7-2 (.778). Both teams defeated North Hills and Upper St. Clair in the final round of PSFC foil competition on April
9. The boys posted a 5-1 win vs. USC and a 5-0 shutout of North Hills, while the girls defeated Upper St. Clair 5-3
and North Hills 5-2. Michael Gray, Brandon Botzer, Brandon Rauch, Tyler Stay and Ryan Germann were undefeated for the
boys, while Tara Helfer and Brittany Thomas finished undefeated for the girls. Devon Verner, Abigail Ballani and Nikki
Klingler added victories to the Hawks' efforts as well. Girls' captain Brittany Thomas also captured the individual
girls' conference foil championship for the second consecutive year with a record of 18-2 (.900).
RESULTS OF RECENT COMPETITIONS
Intra-Squad Epee @ Washington Elementary School (April 24,
2007): Ten BP fencers competed in this event, which was an informal warm-up before the PSFC epee season.
Michael Gray came back to defeat Brandon Rauch in the finals by the score of 5-4. Both fencers finished at
4-1 (.800). Ryan Germann defeated Brittany Thomas 5-2 in the bout for third place. Both fencers finished
at 3-2 (.600). Travis Klein and Brandon Botzer were each 2-2 (.500), finishing 5th and 6th, respectively.
The remainder of the fencers were all 1-3 (.250). Kelsey Lauritzen finished 7th, Alex Lenneman 8th, Tara Helfer
9th and Ashley Bobak 10th.
Mid-Atlantic Junior Sectional Epee Championships @ Northern Lebanon
High School, Fredericksburg, PA (April 29, 2007): Tyler Stay was the only BP fencer to compete in
this open event. He finished 3-4 (.429) in the men's epee competition, and was eliminated in the first round of
Mid-Atlantic Senior Sectional Foil Championships @ Penn State University
(May 5, 2007): BP fencers Brittany Thomas and Abigail Ballani competed in the Women's Foil event.
Both fencers were winless in six bouts in their respective pools, and neither qualified for the DE rounds.
Captain Steere Open Mixed Epee @ DC Fencers Club, Silver Spring MD (May
12, 2007): Eight BP fencers competed in this A2 event, which featured a Veteran's World Champion
and a Junior National Champion as well as Olympic hopefuls. Ryan Germann finished in 12th place with a record of 4-4
(.500), which was good enough to earn him an E07 rating in epee from the USFA. His finish was the highest of any
BP fencer. The other fencers who competed were Travis Klein (3-4), Michael Gray (3-5), Tara Helfer (1-5), Brandon
Rauch (1-5), Shannon Quinlisk (0-6), Tyler Stay (0-6) and Alex Lenneman (0-6).
Captain Steere Open Mixed Foil @ DC Fencers Club, Silver Spring, MD
(May 13, 2007): No less than 20 BP fencers participated in this A2 event, though none managed to crack
the Top 16. Those who fenced were Brandon Botzer (4-3), Ryan Purtell (4-4), Michael Gray (3-4), Tara Helfer (3-4), Devon
Verner (3-4), Mitch Spiroff (3-4), Travis Klein (3-5), Jake Lampenfield (3-5), Ashley Bobak (2-4), Ryan Germann (2-5), Brandon
Rauch (2-5), Emma Killmeyer (2-5), Nick Botzer (2-6), Abigail Ballani (1-5), Shelby Welsh (1-5), Kelsey Lauritzen (1-6),
Nikki Klingler (0-6), Jeff Scott (0-6), Randi Fedela (0-7) and Alex Lenneman (0-8).
USFA Summer National Championships @ Miami, Florida (June 29-July
8, 2007): BP fencer Brandon Rauch was the only fencer to compete at Summer Nationals.
He finished with an overall record of 7-7 (.500), going 4-3 (.571) in the Youth 14 Men's Epee competition, and 3-4 (.429)
in the Under 16 (Cadet) Men's Epee competition. He defeated several rated fencers in the two events, including the eventual
champion of the Youth 14 tournament.
Joe Odom 3-Weapon Team Tournament @ FIA (July 22, 2007):
Bethel Park's team for this event consisted of Brandon Botzer (foil), Brandon Rauch (epee) and Brittany Thomas (sabre).
The Black Hawks finished the event in 3rd place overall with a record of 2-2 (.500) in the tournament. Individually,
Brandon Botzer finished at 3-1 (.750), Brandon Rauch at 2-2 (.500) and Brittany Thomas at 1-3 (.250) in the first sabre competition
of her career.
D and Under Foil @ FIA (August 18, 2007): Ten BP
fencers competed in this event. Brandon Botzer had the highest finish among the Black Hawks, placing third at 8-2 (.800) and
earning an E07 rating for his efforts. Devon Verner had the other top-10 finish, placing seventh with an overall record
of 7-2 (.778). Brandon Rauch finished .500 at 4-4. Travis Klein and Nick Botzer each finished at 3-5 (.375) overall,
while Kelsey Lauritzen and William Botzer posted 2-5 (.286) records. Tara Helfer was 1-6 (.143) overall, and Jake Lampenfield
finished 1-7 (.125). Jeff Scott was winless in seven bouts.
